Life of the Church

The Shared Ministry Agreement between Gabriola United Church and St Martin of Tours Anglican Church was signed on June 25th, 2017.

A celebration was held to recognise this and to also recognise our new church with a new name…we are now called, Christ Church, Gabriola. Sadly, this was also the day Rev. Peggy Jensen’s time as Intentional Interim minister came to an end.

The Shared Ministry Search Committee has been created to help in the search for a new minister to our Pastoral Charge.

Christ Church Gabriola Sunday Service is 10:00 am.

Fellowship

St Martin’s is a welcoming, and comfortable church. Fellowship addresses the need for respect, warmth, community, a sense of peace and caring. Members reach out to each other in fellowship, keep in touch during times of trouble or celebration and enjoy social times (coffee after church), meals together (Sunday lunch at a local restaurant) and “great potluck” meals.

Newcomers and visitors find a very welcoming congregation, extending from greeters at the door to the invitation to the share in Communion. Visitors are welcomed at announcement time, and special efforts are made to include them in the exchange of the Peace and through one-on-one conversations following the service. New members are drawn into the congregation with invitations to participate in parish activities and upcoming events.

We combine fun and fundraising in events including games nights, winter dinners and summer lunches, picnics, garage sales, bake and craft sales, raffles, pancake suppers, and so on. Almost all members of the congregation take part in at least some of these events, and we encourage and get participation from the larger Gabriola community as well.

The parish has a strong ecumenical focus participating regularly in activities such as A World Day of Prayer and the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Many parishioners attend meetings of the Gabriola Ecumenical Society which seeks to promote mutual understanding and relationships among differing denominations and faith traditions. Fellowship is an important component of St Martin’s and we value it very highly.

Education

This parish has taken seriously the commitment to continue our pilgrimage together, knowing more and more about our Christian history and theology, at the same time opening up to new possibilities and interpretations.

Over the past few years we have offered three discussion/DVD programs from Living the Question. The content has ranged from an overview of the current challenges we face as Christians; reviewing Paul’s missionary efforts and, most recently, John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg’s exploring the scripture with fresh eyes to become part of co-creating God’s Kingdom on earth.

We have sponsored notable Christian Theologians such as Dr. Sallie McFague (VST), Rev. Dr. Bill Crockett and Rev. Dr. Richard Leggett who have offered workshops for us as well. This spring (2012) our Lenten study explored the book The Path to Your Door by Ellen Clark-King.

Many of our parishioners are active with the local Ecumenical Society and have gained by participating in their programs. Several of our members have attended workshops held by our Diocesan Staff and have taken Summer Session courses at the Vancouver School of Theology. There have been a number of Bible Study programs that the laity has led very successfully.

Communication

In recognition of the importance of communication within the church and to the larger community, a Parish Communications Coordinator is a volunteer position of the Parish Council. The parish communication strategy, in conjunction with lay and ordained leaders, is to provide overall coordination of internal and external parish communications.
